Empowering Indigenous Education: Unleashing the Digital Revolution for IP Learners

The Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd) Program implemented by DepEd-Sarangani plays a crucial role in fulfilling the mandate of delivering culture-based and culture-sensitive education to Indigenous People (IP) learners. In line with this objective, the IPEd program has been actively engaging in various activities to contextualize and indigenize teaching and learning materials, with a particular focus on young learners. This feature article highlights the efforts and partnerships undertaken by DepEd-Sarangani to enhance IP education through the development of locally-contextualized digital materials.

Forging Partnerships for Indigenous Education:

DepEd Sarangani has established valuable partnerships with private organizations, including Save the Children, Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. (CLAFI), Smart Communications, among others, to provide support for IP education. These collaborations have paved the way for the development, production, and utilization of diverse locally-contextualized materials tailored to the needs of Blaan, Tagakaulo, and Tboli teachers and learners.

Enhancing Digital Literacy Applications:

To further advance the cause of IP education, DepEd-Sarangani is developing a simplified mobile literacy application specifically designed for Tboli and Tagakaulo IP children. This application will offer translations in Mother Tongue, Filipino, and English, thereby fostering multilingualism and ensuring inclusive learning opportunities. As part of the development process, the initial outputs from the first workshop are undergoing review, enhancement, and validation. The content will be carefully examined to ensure culture-sensitivity and appropriateness, aligning with the standards set by DepEd. This essential task will be accomplished through a 3-day live-in training workshop involving IP teachers as writers or illustrators and IP elders.

Addressing Challenges:

While many teachers rely on digital materials for planning and classroom instruction, the availability of sufficient resources remains a significant challenge, particularly in supplementing comprehensive curriculum materials. This scarcity of contextualized digital materials is particularly prevalent among teachers assigned in IP communities, where the language proficiency of K-3 students is primarily focused on their mother tongue.

Training-Workshop for Enhanced Contents:

In response to these challenges, CID Sarangani recently conducted a Training-Workshop on May 19-21, 2023. The workshop aimed to enhance the contents of the Tboli and Tagakaulo mobile literacy and numeracy application. IP teachers served as writers and illustrators, collaborating with IP elders who played a crucial role as validators. This inclusive approach ensures the accuracy, authenticity, and cultural appropriateness of the materials, thereby empowering IP learners and strengthening their cultural identities.

Through the IPEd Program and valuable partnerships, DepEd-Sarangani is taking significant strides toward delivering culture-based education to IP learners. The development of contextualized digital materials, supported by training workshops and the involvement of IP teachers and elders, ensures the creation of culturally sensitive and relevant educational resources. By overcoming barriers and embracing the power of technology, DepEd-Sarangani is fostering inclusive education and empowering Indigenous communities in their pursuit of knowledge and growth.
